![]() ![]() Every bit as well as they do on the PC version, as a matter of fact. The most important question, of course, is: How do the games play? Like a dream. So there are apparently still a few kinks to be worked out. ![]() But when we tried to download it, we got the message "Sid Meier's Civilization IV is not available on your current platform." We wanted to see what happened if we bought it in the Store, but Steam recognized we already owned it and wouldn't let us pay again (nor could it help us play it). We already had it installed on our test PC, and assumed there would be no trouble installing it on our test MacBook Pro. Portal and Torchlight both worked as advertised, installing and playing on both PC and Mac computers. That's a good feature, and a constant flow of games will help spark people's enthusiasm, but a broader and more exciting list of launch titles would better solidify from the beginning Valve's commitment to Mac gaming. Portal, Torchlight, and Football Manager 2010 all demonstrate "Steam Play," the new classification for games that you only need to pay for once and that will thereafter play on both Mac and PC. As of this writing, there are 64, and most are of the old-school or casual sort. The major downside of Steam for Mac, at least right now, is the number of available games. Valve "strongly recommends" a two-button mouse for use with Steam-and we heartily agree-but if you don't have one, prepare for a lot of Ctrl-clicking. In practically every other way, Steam for Mac operates just as the Windows version does-including requiring you to right-click to quickly activate or update games in your Library. If you are a fan of this kind of game, download and install the game, and you will never regret it.It is, however, about the only thing that does.
